Introducing the new home of my writing

The Between Us brings together my writing on psychotherapy, critical psychiatry and relational approaches to psychological distress—and I’d be delighted if you chose to subscribe.

It is a that explores what it means to understand people and psychological distress relationally: through relationships, lived worlds and wider social systems.

I’ll begin by bringing together my existing work from Psychology Today. I’ll then publish new essays that question individualistic and medicalised accounts of psychological distress, alongside writing on a range of related themes.

I will also be developing what I call the “Humanistic-Relational Paradigm” through my work there.

The central argument running through it all is simple: minds are not isolated entities but emerge within relational and social contexts. We grow, suffer and heal through and among one another.

Expect longer essays, shorter commentary, open conversation news about talks, workshops, courses, and more..

P.S. As some of you know, I recently lost my counselling and psychotherapy faculty role when the college where I taught in Exeter went into insolvency. This has left me needing to rebuild a significant part of my working life, and prompted me to focus more fully on my writing and teaching here on Substack. Here, I hope to build some of a sustainable livelihood around the work I care most deeply about. If you’re able to support this work with a paid subscription, it would make a real difference and would be greatly appreciated—and I’ll make sure there are plenty of worthwhile extras in return!
